Gas Burner Won't Light

It's a common call for us in Denver kitchens, and the fix is often small. Here's how to read what your stove is telling you before anyone comes out.

What the symptom is actually telling you
Three things have to line up for a flame: gas at the burner, a spark, and a clean path for both. If you hear clicking but get no flame, gas is likely blocked or the burner cap is off-center. If you get no click at all, the spark side is the suspect. If it lights but dies after you release the knob, that points to the flame sensor circuit on stoves that have one. Notice whether it's one burner or all of them. One burner means a local problem. All burners means something shared, like the igniter switch or the supply.
Cheap causes first: spills, caps, and crumbs
Most no-light calls we run start with food. Boil-over from pasta water dries into the burner ports and seals them. A cap knocked slightly off its base during cleaning breaks the flame path. Grease from a high-heat sear cakes the igniter tip and insulates the spark. Dry Colorado air makes those spills harden fast instead of staying soft and wiping off. Pull the grate, lift the cap and burner head if it lifts free by hand, and look at the little holes around the rim. Blocked holes are the most common reason a burner clicks forever and never catches.
Ignition problems and moisture
That clicking sound is a spark module firing a ceramic electrode. If the electrode is cracked, wet, or coated, the spark jumps somewhere useless. A very common version: you just cleaned the stovetop and now every burner clicks nonstop, even with the knobs off. Water got into the switch area. Leave it uncovered and dry for several hours, sometimes overnight, before calling. If the clicking never stops after drying, the switch or module needs service. If there is no click at all, check that the range is plugged in — gas stoves still need power for ignition.
Safe checks you can do right now
Turn all knobs off first. Confirm the range is plugged in and the outlet works. Remove the grate and lift the burner cap and head if they come off without tools. Wipe them, clear the ports with a straightened paperclip, and dry everything fully before reassembling. Make sure the cap sits flat and centered. Check that other gas appliances in the house are working. That's the line. Don't remove panels, don't touch the gas connector, don't take the cooktop apart. If you smell gas with all knobs off, leave the house and call the gas utility before you call us.

On stoves with safety valves, we test the thermocouple or flame sensor to find out why the valve shuts as soon as you let go. Why do my burners click even when the stove is off?
Usually moisture in the switch area after cleaning, or a stuck igniter switch. Dry the cooktop fully with the knobs off and give it several hours. If it keeps clicking, the switch or spark module needs replacing.
One burner lights but the flame is yellow and weak. Is that related?
Different problem, same family. Yellow flames mean the air-to-gas mix is off, often from clogged ports or an orifice sized for a lower elevation. It's worth having checked, since it soots pans and wastes gas.
Can I light the burner with a match while I wait?
On many ranges yes, if gas is clearly flowing and you smell nothing unusual when the knob is off. Hold the flame near the burner first, then turn the knob. If gas won't shut off cleanly, stop and call us.
