A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights
If your gas burner won't light, the cause is usually a blocked burner port, a cap that's off-center, or a wet ignition switch, and most of those we sort out in one visit. What the symptom is actually telling you
A flame needs gas at the burner, a spark, and a clean path for both. Clicking with no flame usually means gas is blocked or the burner cap isn't seated right. No click at all points at the spark side. If it lights and then dies the moment you let go of the knob, look at the flame sensor circuit on stoves that have one. Pay attention to how many burners are affected. One burner is a local problem. All of them means something shared, like the igniter switch or the gas supply.
Cheap causes first: spills, caps, and crumbs
Most no-light calls we run start with food. Pasta water boils over, dries in the burner ports, and seals them shut. A cap knocked slightly off its base during cleaning breaks the flame path. Grease from a high-heat sear cakes onto the igniter tip and insulates the spark. Dry Colorado air makes those spills harden fast instead of staying soft enough to wipe off. Pull the grate, lift the cap and burner head if it comes free by hand, and look at the little holes around the rim. Blocked holes are the most common reason a burner clicks forever and never catches.
Ignition problems and moisture
That clicking is a spark module firing a ceramic electrode. Crack that electrode, or get it wet or coated, and the spark jumps somewhere useless. Here's the version we hear most: you just cleaned the stovetop, and now every burner clicks nonstop even with the knobs off. Water got into the switch area. Leave it uncovered and let it dry for several hours, sometimes overnight, before you call anyone. If it still clicks after that, the switch or module needs service. And if there's no click at all, check that the range is plugged in. Gas stoves still need power for ignition.
Safe checks you can do right now
Turn all the knobs off first. Confirm the range is plugged in and the outlet works. Take the grate off and lift the burner cap and head if they come off without tools. Wipe them down, clear the ports with a straightened paperclip, and dry everything fully before it goes back together. The cap has to sit flat and centered. Check whether other gas appliances in the house are working. That's where the DIY line is. Don't pull panels, don't touch the gas connector, don't take the cooktop apart. If you smell gas with all knobs off, get out of the house and call the gas utility before you call us.

We test the spark module output and look at each electrode for a cracked ceramic body. We meter the igniter switches behind the knobs to find the one that isn't closing. On stoves with safety valves, we test the thermocouple or flame sensor to learn why the valve shuts the second you let go of the knob. Why do my burners click even when the stove is off?
Almost always moisture in the switch area after cleaning, or an igniter switch that's stuck. Dry the cooktop fully with the knobs off and give it several hours. If it's still clicking, the switch or spark module needs replacing.
One burner lights but the flame is yellow and weak. Is that related?
Different problem, same family. A yellow flame means the air-to-gas mix is off, often from clogged ports or an orifice sized for a lower elevation. Worth having looked at, because it soots your pans and wastes gas.
Can I light the burner with a match while I wait?
On many ranges you can, as long as gas is clearly flowing and you smell nothing unusual with the knob off. Hold the flame near the burner first, then turn the knob. If the gas won't shut off cleanly, stop and call us.
