Do These Things First, In This Order
1. Stop using the range. Turn every knob to off, including the oven dial. 2. Open windows and exterior doors. Denver's dry air moves fast once you get cross-ventilation going. 3. Snuff any open flame — candles, pilot lights you can reach safely, a cigarette. 4. Get people and pets out of the kitchen. 5. If the smell is strong or you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous, leave the house on foot and call the gas utility from outside. 6. If the smell is faint and fades with the windows open, note when it happens — only during preheat, only after a burner lights, only at night. That detail helps us a lot.
What Not to Do
Don't flip light switches, ceiling fans, or the range hood on or off. A switch makes a tiny spark. Same with unplugging anything or hitting a garage door opener. Skip the matches and lighters entirely, even to test a burner. Don't run the oven to "burn it off." Don't spray air freshener or light a candle to cover the smell. Leave the gas shutoff behind the range alone unless the utility or a responder tells you to move it — reaching back there means moving the appliance and stressing the connector. And don't call from inside if the odor is heavy. Step outside first, then dial.
When to Leave and When to Cut Anything Off
Leave immediately if the smell is strong, if you hear hissing near the stove, or if more than one person feels sick. Take your phone, walk out the door, keep walking to the sidewalk. Call 911 or the gas utility emergency line from there. Don't go back in for anything. As for shutting things off: the main gas valve at the meter is the utility's call, not yours. Same with the electrical panel — opening it while gas is in the air isn't worth it. If you have a clearly marked shutoff valve on the flexible line and you can reach it without moving the range, turning it a quarter turn is reasonable. Otherwise wait.

That call is free of charge from your end and they take it seriously. Once they clear the line and tell you the problem is the appliance itself, that's our lane. A few things stack up here. Altitude changes how gas burns — orifices sized for sea level run richer up high, and a burner that lights slow can dump raw gas for a second before it catches. That's the whiff you smell during ignition. Our dry indoor air also shrinks old gaskets and hardens the rubber in aging connectors. And weak kitchen ventilation makes any odor linger instead of clearing. If you smell gas only for a moment when a burner ignites, that's usually an igniter or a partly blocked port, and it's fixable. Can I use the oven while I wait for someone to come out?
No. Keep the range off entirely. If you smelled gas, the appliance stays cold until the gas company checks the line and a technician looks at the burners and valves.
Why does my house smell like gas only in winter?
