One burner stays cold. You turn the knob, the light comes on, and nothing happens. Or the coil glows for a minute, then quits halfway through dinner. Electric cooktops fail in a few predictable ways, and the cold element is usually telling you exactly where the fault sits. What a cold element is actually telling you
Electricity has to travel from the breaker, through the control, into the element. A dead burner means that path broke somewhere. If one element is out and the others work, the problem is almost always local to that burner: the element itself, its plug-in socket, or the switch behind the knob. If two elements die at once, or every burner is weak, think power supply instead. Ranges use two 240-volt legs. Lose one leg and you get odd behavior everywhere. Note which burners work and which do not before you call. That single detail narrows our diagnosis a lot.
Cause one: the element or its socket
On coil cooktops, the element unplugs from a receptacle block. Coils cycle from cold to red-hot thousands of times, and Colorado's dry air plus spilled sugar and grease bake into the terminals. A pitted or burnt contact stops carrying current. Sometimes the coil itself develops an internal break. You may see a blister, a bright scorch mark, or a spot where the coil sagged. On glass-top radiant units, the element sits under the ceramic and can open up the same way. This is the most common fault we find, and often the least involved to correct.
Cause two: the burner switch or control board
Behind each knob is an infinite switch. It clicks on and off to hold your setting. Those contacts wear. A switch can fail closed, so the burner runs full blast no matter the knob, or fail open, so nothing happens at all. If your burner only heats when you wiggle or press the knob, suspect the switch. Glass-top and induction models often use a touch control board instead. Buttons that beep but produce no heat, or a burner that shuts off after a few minutes, point that direction. Both parts need meter testing with the cooktop de-energized, which is our job, not yours.
Safe checks you can do right now
Start at the panel. Look for a tripped double breaker for the range and reset it fully off, then on. Next, if you have coil burners, let everything cool completely, then lift the suspect coil out and swap it with a same-size coil from another position. If the problem follows the coil, you need an element. If the dead spot stays put, it is the socket or switch. Wipe crumbs and burnt spills from the receptacle with a dry cloth. We pull an actual resistance reading on the element and compare it to the spec for that part. A coil that looks fine can still be open inside. We check both legs of the 240-volt supply at the terminal block, because a loose feed wire mimics a bad element and swapping parts will not fix it. Can I keep using the cooktop with one dead burner?
Usually yes, if nothing smells hot and no burner glows when it should be off. But a scorched receptacle is a fire risk. If you see melting or smell burning plastic, stop using the appliance and call us.
Why did my burner work, then quit mid-cook?
That pattern often means a worn infinite switch cycling itself off, or an element with a hairline break that opens when it expands with heat. Both need meter testing to tell apart.
Is a glass cooktop harder to fix than coils?
Different, not harder. Coils unplug from the top. Radiant elements sit under the ceramic and need the cooktop lifted, so it takes more time and careful handling of the glass.
