Age matters, but not the way you think
Most refrigerators have a usable life measured in years, not decades. Age alone doesn't decide anything, though. A 14-year-old unit with a bad door gasket is an easy fix. A 9-year-old unit with a failing sealed system is a harder conversation. What we look at is how the fridge has been living. Dry Denver air is kind to appliances, since less humidity means less corrosion on coils and fan housings. What hurts them here is dust. Homes near open space or under construction pull grit through the condenser, and a dusty coil makes the compressor run long and hot for years before anything fails outright. Age sets the odds. The fault sets the answer.
The fault type tells you more than the year on the label
Some failures are routine: door seals, defrost heaters, thermistors, evaporator fans, control boards, water valves, ice maker modules. Those are normal wear items on any brand. Replacing one on an older fridge usually makes sense, because the rest of the machine is still sound. Other failures are structural. A leak in the sealed refrigerant loop, a compressor that has stopped, or a corroded evaporator buried in the foam are different animals. Those repairs are invasive, and on an older cabinet they often buy less time than people hope. When you call, describe the symptom plainly. Warm fresh food but a frozen freezer. Water pooling under the crisper. Clicking every few minutes. Those details point us at the category before we ever open the door.
Can we still get the part?
This is the quiet dealbreaker. Manufacturers stop making parts for discontinued models, and once the aftermarket supply dries up, a simple repair becomes impossible no matter how easy it looks. Control boards and proprietary ice maker assemblies go obsolete first. Generic items like fans, thermostats, gaskets and defrost components stay available much longer. We check part availability before we commit to anything. If your model number is still supported, an older fridge can keep going a long while. If the only board left is a used pull with no way to verify it, we'll say so instead of gambling with your time. Have the model number ready when you call us. It's usually on a sticker inside, along the left wall or above the crisper drawers.
How we call it during the visit
On site we start with the simple stuff. Is the condenser packed with dust and pet hair. Are the door seals sealing. Is the condenser fan spinning. Is airflow between the freezer and the fresh food section blocked by frost or a stalled evaporator fan. When replacing honestly wins

A very old fridge runs a lot of hours to hold temperature, and in a dry climate the defrost cycle works harder than most people realize. Is a noisy refrigerator a sign it's dying?
Not always. Buzzing and rattling often trace to a condenser fan, a fan blade hitting frost, or the drain pan vibrating. A deep laboring hum from the compressor is more serious. The character of the sound matters more than the volume.
My fridge is cold but the freezer is icing over. Bad sign?
Usually it's the defrost system: heater, thermostat, or timer. That's a common, repairable fault on older units. Left alone, the frost blocks airflow and the fresh food side warms up too.
Should I repair an old second fridge in the garage?
