Freezer Frosting Over
You open the freezer and there's a snowbank on the back wall. Ice is creeping over the drawer. Frozen peas are welded to the shelf. You scrape it out, and three weeks later it's back. Heavy frost isn't normal, even in dry Colorado air. It means warm, moist air is getting in, or the defrost cycle stopped doing its job. Here's how we sort it out.

What all that ice is actually telling you
Frost is moisture that found a cold surface. Every time the door opens, room air walks in. Denver air is dry, so a thin dusting after a big grocery load is nothing to worry about. Thick, hard ice is different. It means either air is leaking in nonstop, or the freezer's automatic defrost heater isn't melting the coil frost off on schedule. Ice on the back panel usually points to defrost. Ice near the door or lid usually points to sealing. Where the ice sits is our first clue, so look before you scrape.
Cause family one: the door and the gasket
Start with the cheapest suspect. The rubber gasket around the door goes stiff and cracked, especially in our dry climate. A gap the width of a pencil is enough to pump humid air in all day. Check for a torn corner, a flattened spot, or old syrup holding it open. Also check what's inside. A tall box or a bag of ice can block the door from closing the last half inch. Overloaded drawers do the same thing. Level matters too. If the unit sits crooked on an older Denver kitchen floor, the door may not swing shut on its own.
Cause family two: drain, airflow, and habits
Frost-free freezers melt water during each defrost and send it down a small drain. When that drain clogs, water refreezes into a sheet on the floor of the freezer or under the drawer. You may find ice you can chip loose with a plastic spoon. Airflow counts as well. Stacking food against the rear vents blocks cold air from circulating and creates frozen patches. Give the vents a few inches. Set the temperature near zero degrees, not colder. Cranking it down doesn't help and often makes frost worse by running the compressor longer.
Cause family three: the defrost system or a stuck damper
If the gasket is fine and food isn't blocking vents, the defrost system is the likely problem. That's a heater, a sensor, and a timer or control board working together. When one part quits, frost builds on the evaporator coil behind the rear panel until air can barely pass. The freezer keeps running but the fresh food side gets warm. Ice makers add another path. A leaking fill valve or a cracked line drips water that freezes solid. On side-by-side units, a stuck air damper between compartments can also dump humid air where it doesn't belong.
Safe checks for you, and what we do differently
Safe for you: inspect the gasket, wipe it with warm soapy water, look for blocked vents, confirm the door shuts fully, and check that the ice maker isn't dripping. You can also defrost the whole unit by unplugging it and letting it thaw with towels down. Skip the hair dryer and skip the screwdriver. We stay out of rear panels, capacitors, and sealed refrigerant lines. On our side, we test the defrost heater and sensor with a meter, read control board behavior, check the drain path, and confirm the sealed system is doing its part. Call us and describe where the ice is.
Freezer Frosting Over — quick answers
Can I just keep scraping the ice out?
You can, and it buys time. But the frost returns because the cause is still there. Repeated hard scraping also risks puncturing the coil housing or tearing the liner, which turns a small repair into a bigger one.
Does Colorado's dry air mean less frost?
Usually yes. Low humidity means less moisture to freeze, which is why heavy ice here stands out as a real fault rather than normal weather. Summer thunderstorm days and a busy kitchen can still add moisture.
Why is my fridge side warm when the freezer is icy?
On most models, cold air flows from the freezer coil into the fresh food section. When frost chokes that coil, airflow drops. The freezer stays cold, the fridge climbs, and food spoils faster.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Phone us or fill the form. Describe the noise, the smell, the error code. Mention your altitude and whether the unit vents outside. Small details help us load the right parts on the van.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the appliance in your kitchen or laundry room. We test airflow, heat, drainage, and electrical. Then we explain the fault in plain words and outline the repair options before touching a wrench.
- Step 3
Repair and airflow check
Once you approve, we do the work. Before packing up, we run the appliance and verify it vents, drains, and cycles properly. We clean the area and tell you what to watch for next season.

Questions worth asking any repair company
Ask these of anyone you let into your home — us included. Call and we'll answer all five before you book anything.
- 1Ask for their license numberThen verify it with your state licensing board rather than taking it on trust.
- 2Ask for proof of insuranceLiability cover protects you if something goes wrong in your home.
- 3Get the quote in writingIncluding the trip fee, whether it's credited against the repair, and parts.
- 4Ask how they handle callbacksIf the same fault returns, what happens? Get the answer before work begins.

Why homeowners call us
- Rooted in kitchen ventilationHoods, ducts, and blower motors are where we started. That habit sticks. We look at how air moves through your dryer vent, fridge coils, and dishwasher drain, because blocked airflow causes more breakdowns than bad parts do.
- Built for thin, dry airColorado altitude changes how burners fire and how moisture leaves a room. Dry air cracks gaskets and dries out seals early. We account for both when we diagnose, instead of treating your home like sea level.
- Independent and directWe are an independent repair company working on all major brands. No script, no upsell theater. If a repair does not make sense for the age of the machine, we say that out loud and let you decide.
- Clear talk, clean workYou get the fault explained in words you can repeat to your spouse. Shoes stay respectful of floors, drop cloths go down, and dust from vent work gets vacuumed up before we leave your kitchen.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
