Coils are how your refrigerator dumps heat into the room. When they're blanketed in dust, the heat stays trapped, and the compressor keeps running toward a temperature it can't reach. Longer run times. A hotter cabinet, and a motor working against itself. Over months that heat cooks the condenser fan motor and stresses the compressor. Freezer temps drift, food spoils sooner, and the bill creeps up quietly. None of it happens overnight, which is exactly why it sneaks past people. A fridge with clean coils and one with matted coils sound different, and the dusty one always sounds busier. Altitude doesn't help. Thinner air carries less heat away per pass.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the refrigerator first. Always. Then find the coils. On most units they sit behind a snap-off grille at the bottom front, or exposed at the lower back. Pull the grille off by hand if it comes free easily, no tools, no screws, no panels. Vacuum with a brush attachment or crevice tool, working in the direction of the fins rather than across them, since bent fins hurt airflow too. Follow up with a long coil brush to reach dust the vacuum misses. Wipe the floor underneath while you're down there. Snap the grille back, plug in, done. If the coils are behind screws or a sealed cover, stop and leave it to a tech.
How often, and what changes the answer
Twice a year is a reasonable baseline for most Denver kitchens. Spring and fall works. Tie it to when you swap the furnace filter. Go quarterly if you have a shedding dog or cat, if the fridge sits on carpet, or if anyone in the house is doing a remodel. Drywall dust is brutal on coils. Same for homes with forced-air heat running hard all winter, which is most of ours. Also check the space around the fridge. Cereal boxes on top and bags shoved behind it block the exhaust path, so leave a couple inches of breathing room on the sides and back. Write the date on a note inside the door.
Signs prevention already came too late
Cleaning helps a struggling fridge, but it won't fix a failed one. Call someone when you see these: The compressor runs constantly and never cycles off. The freezer holds but the fresh food side sits above 40 degrees. Water pooling under the unit, or frost building on the back wall of the freezer in a solid sheet. A clicking sound every few minutes, then silence. Sides of the cabinet hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch.
