Dryer Taking Two Cycles

You start a load of towels. An hour later they're still damp. So you hit start again. Two cycles to dry one load has become normal in your house. That's not normal. In most Colorado homes we visit, the dryer is fine and the vent is the problem. Here's how to tell, and what's safe to check yourself.

What "two cycles" is actually telling you

A dryer doesn't dry with heat alone. It dries by moving hot air across wet clothes and pushing that wet air outside. If the air can't get out, moisture stays in the drum and your clothes just tumble in a damp cloud. That's why long dry times almost always mean airflow, not heat. A quick tell: open the door mid-cycle. If the drum feels hot and humid like a sauna, heat is working and exhaust is not. If the drum is barely warm, we look at heating parts instead.

Cause family one: lint and a clogged vent run

This is the cheapest and most common cause. Lint builds in the screen, the lint trap housing, the flex hose behind the dryer, and the duct inside the wall. Older Denver homes often have long duct runs to a roof cap, sometimes twenty or thirty feet with elbows. Every elbow slows air. Add a crushed foil hose behind the machine and airflow drops hard. Dry Colorado air makes lint light and fluffy, so it drifts far into the duct and packs at the first bend. Clearing the whole run, not just the screen, often fixes dry times on its own.

Cause family two: the vent cap and the outside end

Air has to leave the building. We find exterior flaps painted shut, screens added by a previous owner, bird nests in roof caps, and dryer sheets stuck to the damper. At higher elevations, thinner air means the blower has less to work with, so a partly blocked cap hurts more than it would at sea level. Go outside while the dryer runs. You should feel a steady warm push and see the flap open. Weak flutter or nothing at all points to a blockage between the wall and the cap. Snow drifts and ice can also seal a low cap in winter.

Cause family three: blower, sensors, and heat

If the duct is clean and the outside flow is strong, we move inside the machine. A cracked blower wheel or a slipping belt means the drum turns but air barely moves. Moisture sensor bars coated in fabric softener film read clothes as dry too early, so the cycle stops while the load is still wet. On electric units, a partly failed heating element gives lukewarm air and endless cycles. Gas units can have weak ignition. Those checks involve panels, gas, and live parts, so they're ours to handle, not yours.

Safe checks you can do before you call us

Clean the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water beads and sits, softener buildup is choking it. Scrub with dish soap and let it dry. Vacuum the lint trap slot. Pull the dryer out gently and look at the flex hose for kinks or crushing. Check the outside vent flap for flow. Try one load with nothing else running in the laundry room and the door open. If dry times are still double, call us. Skip anything that needs a screwdriver on the back panel, and don't run the dryer if you smell burning lint.

Dryer Taking Two Cycles — quick answers

Can a bad vent really double my dry time?

Yes. Restricted exhaust traps moisture in the drum, so clothes tumble in humid air instead of drying. We regularly see dry times cut in half after clearing a packed duct run and a stuck exterior flap.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Once a year suits most homes. Clean more often with a long duct run, a roof cap, pets, or heavy laundry loads. If lint shows up around the door seal, don't wait.

Is running the dryer twice dangerous or just wasteful?

Both. Trapped lint plus repeated heat cycles is a fire risk, and the machine's parts run hotter than designed. Long dry times are worth investigating rather than working around.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Phone us or fill the form. Describe the noise, the smell, the error code. Mention your altitude and whether the unit vents outside. Small details help us load the right parts on the van.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the appliance in your kitchen or laundry room. We test airflow, heat, drainage, and electrical. Then we explain the fault in plain words and outline the repair options before touching a wrench.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and airflow check

Once you approve, we do the work. Before packing up, we run the appliance and verify it vents, drains, and cycles properly. We clean the area and tell you what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us

  • Rooted in kitchen ventilationHoods, ducts, and blower motors are where we started. That habit sticks. We look at how air moves through your dryer vent, fridge coils, and dishwasher drain, because blocked airflow causes more breakdowns than bad parts do.
  • Built for thin, dry airColorado altitude changes how burners fire and how moisture leaves a room. Dry air cracks gaskets and dries out seals early. We account for both when we diagnose, instead of treating your home like sea level.
  • Independent and directWe are an independent repair company working on all major brands. No script, no upsell theater. If a repair does not make sense for the age of the machine, we say that out loud and let you decide.
  • Clear talk, clean workYou get the fault explained in words you can repeat to your spouse. Shoes stay respectful of floors, drop cloths go down, and dust from vent work gets vacuumed up before we leave your kitchen.
  • All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
