What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer tumbles and it heats. The motor spins the drum, a separate heat source warms the air, and a blower pulls that air through the clothes and out the vent. If the drum still turns, your motor and belt are fine. That leaves heating parts, safety switches that shut heat off, or airflow so bad the dryer protects itself. Electric and gas dryers fail in different ways, but from the laundry room the symptom looks the same. That is why we ask which type you have before anything else.
Start with the vent, because that is usually the story
Blocked airflow is the most common cause we find, and the cheapest to fix. Lint packs into the hose behind the dryer, the wall duct, or the exterior flap. A crushed foil hose behind a tight cabinet does the same thing. When hot air cannot leave, heat builds and a safety device cuts the heating element or gas valve. Sometimes it never comes back on. Clues: clothes take two or three cycles, the top of the dryer feels hot, or the outside flap barely moves while the dryer runs. Denver homes with long basement duct runs are prime candidates.
Heat parts and safety switches
On an electric dryer the heating element itself can break. So can the thermal fuse, a one-time safety part that opens after an overheat and never resets. Thermostats and cycling switches fail too, and leave you with a cold tumble. Gas dryers add igniters, flame sensors, and gas valve coils; a weak igniter will glow but never light. There is a third pattern on electric dryers. Half the power is out at the breaker or cord, so the motor runs on one leg while the element gets nothing. All of it needs a meter to confirm.
Safe checks you can do right now
Pull the dryer out a foot and look at the flex hose. Kinked, crushed, or stuffed with lint, and that alone can explain cold clothes. Clean the lint screen, then hold it under running water. If water pools instead of passing through, fabric softener film is choking airflow. Go outside and watch the vent flap while a cycle runs; you should feel steady warm air. Check that the cycle is not set to Air Fluff or Delicate. Reset the breaker once. Stop there. Do not pull panels, touch gas lines, or bypass a switch.

On gas models we watch the ignition sequence to see whether the igniter glows, the valve opens, and the flame holds. Then we measure airflow at the vent. Replacing a fuse without clearing the duct means it blows again in a month. If the duct run is the real problem, we tell you that plainly. Can I just keep running the dryer twice?
We would not. If a safety part or the duct is the cause, heat is building up somewhere it should not be. Lint plus heat is a fire risk, and you are burning power on long cycles besides.
Is a cold dryer usually the heating element?
Not always. Blocked vents and blown thermal fuses come up just as often, and a half-lost electrical leg looks the same from the outside. Testing tells us which. Swapping the element blindly often changes nothing.
Does Colorado's dry air affect drying time?
Dry air helps, which is why a cold, slow cycle stands out here. Altitude does not stop a dryer from heating. If drying suddenly takes twice as long, treat it as a real fault.
