The two-minute habit
Open the door and pull the bottom rack out. At the floor of the tub you'll see a round cap or cylinder, often with an arrow on it. Twist it counterclockwise a quarter turn and lift it out. Under it there's usually a flat mesh screen that also lifts free. Rinse both in the sink under warm water. An old toothbrush and a drop of dish soap handles the greasy spots. Wipe the empty filter well with a paper towel, then drop the parts back in and twist until they seat. No tools, no panels, nothing to unplug.

Once a month covers most households. If you scrape plates every night you can stretch it. Run the dishwasher daily, cook with a lot of oil, or load plates straight from dinner without scraping, and every two weeks is better.
