What "runs but no heat" actually tells us

A microwave has two separate jobs. One set of parts runs the show: the display, the fan, the light, the turntable motor. Another set makes the heat. When the first group works and the second doesn't, the fault is almost always in the high-voltage side or in a switch that's supposed to give it permission to fire. That's useful news. It means the control board is probably fine and the door is closing enough to start a cycle. It also means the failed part sits behind a metal panel with a capacitor that stores a serious charge, even unplugged. That part is not a homeowner job.

Cause family one: door switches and latch wear

Cheapest and most common. Your microwave has two or three small switches that tell it the door is shut. One switch lets the cycle start. Another gives the high-voltage circuit its go-ahead. If that second switch wears out, everything runs but nothing heats. Look at the latch. Does the door need a nudge or a slam? Is there a rattle? Does the hinge sag? Denver's dry air makes plastic latches brittle over the years, and a door that has been bumped by a hip a thousand times gets sloppy. Switches are small, inexpensive parts. We test them with a meter instead of guessing.

Cause family two: the magnetron or its high-voltage parts

The magnetron is the tube that makes the microwaves. Feeding it are a transformer, a capacitor, and a diode. Any one of them can fail and kill heat while the rest of the oven keeps humming. A dying magnetron sometimes gets loud, buzzes, or heats weakly for a minute then quits. A shorted diode often trips your breaker or makes a loud hum. A failed capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after you unplug it. We test these with the power off and the capacitor discharged, in that order, using insulated tools. Never open this panel yourself.

Cause family three: thermal cutouts and overheating

Microwaves have thermal fuses and thermostats that shut down heat when things get too warm. They trip for a reason. Blocked vents are the usual culprit. Over-the-range units breathe through a filter and a duct, and in a Denver kitchen that duct may run a long way to the roof. Grease-clogged filters make the unit run hot. High altitude means thinner air, so cooling fans move less mass per turn. Check the charcoal or mesh filter under the unit. Pull it out and hold it to a light. If you can't see through it, wash it or replace it. Also confirm the cabinet vents above the door aren't blocked.
